Product description

A fish scale is a composite material: a collagen matrix reinforced with hydroxyapatite, the same calcium phosphate mineral that reinforces human bone. Roughly 40 to 50% of scale dry weight is that mineral.

In conventional collagen production the mineral is dissolved during demineralisation and leaves the plant in the acid liquor as the largest single waste stream. We recover it instead, and process it into a food-grade calcium phosphate.

Marine-derived hydroxyapatite differs from synthetic material in a way that matters. It is nano-crystalline and carbonate-substituted — the form biological bone mineral actually takes — rather than the stoichiometric, highly crystalline structure produced by chemical synthesis.

Sustainability

Why this product exists

Recovering the mineral rather than discharging it is an environmental decision as much as a commercial one. It reduces the mineral load in our effluent, which is the principal environmental constraint on any collagen extraction facility.

It also means a single kilogram of fish scale yields two saleable materials instead of one, which is what makes collection from small suppliers economically viable.

How does this differ from synthetic hydroxyapatite?
Marine-derived material is nano-crystalline and carbonate-substituted, closer to biological bone mineral than the highly crystalline stoichiometric form produced synthetically.

Can particle size be specified?
Yes, and it is usually the parameter that decides whether the material works. Along with crystallinity, Ca:P ratio, surface area and density — see the full parameter set.

Is biomedical grade available?
Not at present. Biomedical use requires medical device qualification, a programme we are working toward with our research partners. Food and oral-care grades are available now.
