Why marine collagen dominates in India when bovine leads everywhere else
Globally, bovine is the leading collagen source. In India the position is almost exactly reversed — and the reason has little to do with science.
Ask most people in the global ingredients industry which collagen source leads, and the answer is bovine. It accounts for roughly 45% of worldwide supply. Marine sits at around a quarter of that market.
In India, the position is close to inverted. Marine collagen holds something in the region of 70% of the collagen supplement market.
That is not because Indian formulators have reached a different scientific conclusion. It is because the market has a different shape.
The constraint is cultural, not technical
Bovine collagen is derived from cattle hide and bone. In a country where a very large share of the population holds religious objections to bovine-derived products, that is a distribution problem no amount of clinical data will solve. Porcine collagen faces its own well-understood constraints across a different and also substantial segment of the market.
Marine collagen is the only animal-derived source that is broadly acceptable across essentially the entire Indian market. For a brand selling nationally, it is often the only option that does not close off a segment of its own customer base.
The science is favourable too, which helps
It would be convenient to stop there, but the technical case is genuinely good. Marine collagen peptides are typically smaller than bovine peptides, and the general observation across the literature is that this smaller peptide size supports faster absorption.
For a consumer product where perceived onset matters, that is a meaningful formulation advantage. But it is worth being honest about the ordering: the market structure came first, and the science has been a welcome confirmation rather than the original driver.
What this means for supply
Here is the part that interests us most.
India's marine collagen production capacity sits overwhelmingly in the west of the country. The raw material — the fish scales and skin from which Type I collagen is recovered — is landed in very large quantities along the southern and eastern coasts.
Raw material is being moved across the country to be processed, and finished peptide is then being imported in substantial volumes on top of that.
There is a gap in the middle of that picture, and it is roughly the shape of a processing operation sitting where the fish are landed.
A note on plant-based alternatives
Plant-based products marketed as collagen alternatives occupy a real and growing part of the Indian market, and for strictly vegetarian consumers they are the only available option.
It is worth being precise about what they are. These products generally contain no collagen. They supply amino acids, vitamin C and botanical extracts that support the body's own collagen synthesis. That is a legitimate approach with its own rationale, but it is a different mechanism from supplying preformed peptides, and the evidence bases are not interchangeable.
As substantiation requirements for health claims tighten, that distinction is likely to become more visible rather than less.
